Picture two Bibles on the same shelf. One is slim enough to slide into a jacket pocket. The other is more than two inches thick and heavy enough to hold a door open.Even though they look different, both contain the same biblical text.
So, how many pages does the Bible have? A standard adult Bible usually has around 1,200 pages.Nearly all of them sit somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500.
Hold on to that number. The rest of this page shows why it shifts, and points you to a measure that never shifts at all.

A Number You Can Actually Use
Take a plain adult Bible. Hardcover. Type around 9 or 10 point. Nothing but text. Expect roughly twelve hundred pages.
Other editions travel a long way from that figure, up and down alike. Take five printed Bibles whose publishers state a page total.
| Bible edition | Publisher | Listed pages |
| CSB Pew Bible | Holman | 1,088 |
| NIV Super Giant Print Reference Bible | Zondervan | 2,016 |
| KJV Study Bible, standard print | Christian Art Publishers | 2,176 |
| ESV Study Bible | Crossway | 2,752 |
| ESV Study Bible, Large Print | Crossway | 3,008 |
Look at the gap. The first is an everyday church Bible. The last is a study edition of the same sixty-six books. Almost two thousand pages separate them.
Outside Size Tells You Nothing
This is where a lot of answers slide off track.
A physically small Bible can still hold a very long count. The St. Joseph New Catholic Bible is sold in a compact size, only about four inches wide. Its listed length is 1,776 pages. It stays small because the sheets are extremely thin and the type is 7 point. It runs long because the whole Catholic canon is inside.
So when a Bible is described as compact, that describes the outside of the object. It says nothing about the figure printed in the back.
What Pushes the Figure Up or Down
Four things move it.
Type size. Bigger letters cost the most pages. A giant print Bible can pass two thousand pages even with hardly any notes, because every line carries fewer words.
Page width. A broad page fits more text on each line. A narrow one breaks the same sentence across more lines, which means more sheets.
Notes and helps. Commentaries, maps, charts, chapter headings and cross-reference columns all take space. They sit beside the sacred text without being part of it. A study edition can double the count while adding zero verses.
Which books are inside. Catholic editions print the Deuterocanonical writings between the two testaments, so the total comes to 73 books instead of 66. Printed Catholic Bibles usually arrive near 1,600 pages.
Which Bible Books Are Included?
This changes everything before the printing is even discussed.
Protestant Bibles carry 66 books, 39 before Christ and 27 after. Catholic Bibles carry 73. Orthodox editions carry more again.
You can see the full shape of the Protestant canon in our guide to how many chapters are in the Bible. The book count holds steady when the font changes. The page count does not.
The Figures That Never Move
Want a measurement that survives a fresh printing? Count words and verses, not sheets.
The King James Version holds 783,137 words. Inside its 1,189 chapters sit 31,102 verses. Every copy of that text repeats those three figures.
Pages belong to the printer. Words belong to the text. If you want the full breakdown, see how many verses the Bible has.
If you care more about reading time than page count, check how long it takes to read the Bible.
And if you want the Bible described in its own terms, read God’s Word: What Does the Bible Say About It?
Why Does Bible Paper Feel So Thin?
Bible paper is manufactured much thinner than the paper inside a normal novel. This is deliberate. Slim sheets keep a twelve-hundred page book light in one hand and tight enough to sew and bind.
It is also why a Bible can feel fragile while barely weighing anything. The thinness is a design choice, not a mark of a cheap edition.
Thick Does Not Mean Better
A heavy Bible may carry big type and a full set of notes. A slim one may carry the same words with none of them.
Neither is nearer the original. Choose the size you will genuinely open, in the translation you trust.
Common Questions
How many pages are in the Bible?
A typical adult Bible has about 1,200 pages. Most fall between 1,000 and 1,500.
How many pages is a study Bible?
Study editions jump well past the plain ones. Crossway lists its ESV Study Bible at 2,752 sheets, and the large print at 3,008.
How many pages is a pew Bible?
Church pew Bibles sit close to a standard Bible. The CSB Pew Bible lists 1,088 pages.
Can a small Bible have many pages?
Yes. A compact edition with 7 point type and very thin paper can list well over 1,500 pages, because the whole canon is inside it.
Why can Bibles with the same text have different page counts?
Publisher choices decide it. Letter size, line width, paper thickness and any added notes all shift the total.
How many words and verses are in the Bible?
Count the King James Version and you get 783,137 words, sitting in 31,102 verses across 1,189 chapters.
The Short Answer Once More
Most Bibles you pick up will come near 1,200 pages. Study editions climb past 2,700. Some compact printings drop under 800.
If you want a figure that holds still, count the words instead. The King James Version carries 783,137 of them.
Then set the page count aside. Open the book. The reading is what you came for.
